Typically when a prospective client goes directly to a money management firm, there is no independent evaluation or broad-based selection. Generally the only investment product presented is what that particular firm offers. Often firms will want to hold the entire portfolio for the client. When a money managing firm also serves as the investment consultant, that can create a challenging situation when portfolio performance is below target expectations. Using an independent consultant, such as Buckley Investment Group, prevents this situation.

The essential difference between our firm and others is that ours is an independent consulting firm. Why is that different? We search the entire database of national-level money managers for the top firms to serve our clients. Very stringent criteria are applied that evaluate these firms. Their performance is thoroughly examined regarding relevant indices and their competitors. They are ranked using numerous different investment measurements. Once selected, each firm is reviewed based on the background of the main principals and the firm's legal and operating history. Industry and client references are also checked. When the finalization of the firm selection occurs, portfolio managers are asked to present to the client either via an on-site meeting or a conference call with a personal representative of the firm.

The other major difference is the service we provide monitoring and reporting on the performance of the selected money managers for the client. Our firm provides on-going due diligence for the client on each of the money managers. Should a money manager's performance not meet the Investment Policy Statement's requirements, then our firm replaces the manager.

Being completely independent allows us to bring objectivity and creativity to our investment consulting services. Firms that consult and directly invest client's funds have an inherently- biased perspective. The compensation our firm earns is directly based on the performance of our investment consulting and the separate account managers we recommend. All management fees are based on client account values. This puts us on the same side of the table with the client to work together monitoring the managers and overall portfolio performance.

We strongly believe, from first-hand experience in managing institutional assets, that an effective way to achieve the goals of top performance with less risk and market volatility is the use of separately managed accounts. Another positive aspect is the area of fiduciary responsibility. Separately managed accounts are investment portfolios where the client directly owns the securities in the portfolio. In contrast, a mutual fund client simply owns shares of a pool of securities. Separately managed accounts provide 100 percent transparency at all times.
